Great Lakes Tribal Conservation Corps - Crew Leaders & Members

Great Lakes Tribal Conservation Corps (GLTCC) is a branch of the Great Lakes Climate Corps (GLCC). The GLTCC Crew Leader and Crew Members are full-time seasonal employees who work in a crew of four alongside Keweenaw Bay Indian Community's (KBIC) Natural Resource Department (NRD) staff on their priority projects. The GLTCC crew contributes to the community's food security by helping to grow fresh produce and culturally relevant plants for KBIC community members. The GLTCC crew will also work on non-tribal projects including native species planting, invasive species removal, trail building and maintenance, Great Lakes shoreline restoration, pollution prevention, environmental monitoring and much more with a variety of other partners. Tribal members and tribal descendants will receive preference in the hiring process, but this is not required.
The GLTCC crew will return to Marquette, MI on weekends and are expected to camp most weekdays during the 12 week summer season (mid-May through mid-August). Campsites, cooking equipment, camping equipment, a work truck, gas, tools, materials, and training are all provided. Housing is not provided when not camping for work.
Crew Leaders ($19/hr) are responsible for leading and supervising a crew of three other young adults. Duties include crew management and safety, task delegation, weekly data sheets and photo submission, regular communication with project managers, and maintenance of tools. Crew Leader applicants should have demonstrated experience in supervision and working outdoors.
Crew Members ($17/hr) are responsible for following the direction of their Crew Leader and working together as a team to safely and efficiently accomplish projects while gaining field experience camping, cooking, living, and working in an outdoor small-group setting.
Beyond the crew described above, we are also hiring GLCC Crew Leaders and Members to work on other types of crews including:
- Great Lakes Climate Corps Crews - (based out of Marquette, MI) these crews are generalists, working on a wide variety of conservation, restoration, and recreation projects while partnering with professionals from dozens of tribal, federal, state, and local agencies all across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (camping required most weekdays of the 12 week summer field season).
- Ottawa National Forest Trail Crew - (based out of Marquette, MI) the season will begin with USFS chainsaw certification/training before beginning work on more than 100 miles of North Country Trail segments in the Ottawa National Forest. Trail work will be the primary focus of the crew, but responsibilities may include invasive species monitoring/removal, erosion control, plantings, and other ONF priority projects. This crew can expect to work closely with ONF recreation staff and NCT volunteers.
- Wildfire Prevention Crew (based out of Marquette, MI) this crew will not be fighting fires, rather providing free wildfire risk reduction services to homes, camps, local businesses, public buildings and infrastructure by clearing defensible space, limbing trees, felling small trees, clearing brush and more. This crew will be assigned cold-call door knocking and distributing Firewise education and outreach programming one-on-one to homeowners and at community gatherings. Priority will be given to those available to continue work through the summer and fall seasons May 19-Nov 7. The season will begin with USFS chainsaw certification/training and training to properly evaluate property fire risk.
